How to convert a horizontal video to vertical in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Add your video

Drag and drop an MP4, MOV or WebM file, or click to browse. You can add several videos at once.

  2. 2

    Choose a style

Pick Blurred background to keep the full picture, Fill to crop to full screen, or Zoom to focus on your subject. Drag the frame to position the crop.

  3. 3

    Export and download

Click Export. Your 1080×1920 MP4 is created on your own computer and ready to upload to Shorts, TikTok or Reels.

Blurred background vs crop vs zoom: which should you use?

Blurred background keeps the entire frame of your horizontal video visible and fills the empty space above and below with a soft, blurred copy. It is the best choice for wide shots, gameplay, slides and anything with text near the edges. The downside: your subject appears smaller on the phone screen.

Fill (crop) cuts a 9:16 window out of your 16:9 video so it fills the whole phone screen. Use it when the action stays in one area — talking heads, product close-ups, ASMR. The sides are cut off, so drag the frame carefully over what matters.

Zoom is the middle ground. It crops less than Fill (roughly a 5:6 window) and places the result over a blurred background, so the subject is big but still has some context. It shines for cooking, crafts and other hands-on videos.

Not sure? Start with Zoom — it works for most videos.

Why convert horizontal videos to vertical?

Vertical video fills the entire phone screen, and YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Reels are all built around the 9:16 format. A horizontal video uploaded as-is shows up as a small strip with big black bars, which makes people swipe away.

Converting landscape to portrait video is also the fastest way to grow without filming anything new. Old YouTube videos, video podcasts, livestream highlights and gameplay recordings are full of 20–60 second moments that work perfectly as Shorts once they are in the right format.

Private by design: your video never leaves your computer

Most online converters upload your file to a server, process it there and make you download it again. This one does not. The conversion runs locally in your browser with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly.

  • No waiting for uploads — a 300 MB file starts converting immediately.
  • No server file size limits; only your device's memory counts.
  • Full privacy for unreleased, client or personal footage.
  • Once the page has loaded, the converter keeps working even if your connection drops.

Turn long videos into multiple Shorts

Open Advanced settings to trim the start and end of your video, or split it automatically into 15, 30 or 60 second clips. Each clip becomes its own 1080×1920 MP4, so one ten-minute video can turn into a week of Shorts. Want to cut the best moment first? Use the Video Trimmer, and shrink large exports with the Video Compressor.

Tips for best results

  • Keep important text and faces in the center — platform buttons cover the bottom and right side of vertical videos.
  • Use Fill only when the action stays in one area; otherwise use Zoom.
  • Export at 1080×1920 — lower resolutions look blurry on modern phones.
  • Shorter is better: clips of 15–30 seconds often get more replays.
  • Add a title overlay in the first second so viewers know what they're watching.
  • Don't upload the same clip to every platform at the exact same time; spread your posts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a horizontal video to vertical for free?

Drop your MP4, MOV or WebM file into the converter above, pick Blurred background, Fill or Zoom, and click Export. Every logged-in account gets 5 free exports per day, reset at midnight Brussels time. The result is a 1080×1920 vertical MP4 without a watermark, created on your own device in a few seconds to a few minutes.

Will my video lose quality when converting to 9:16?

The output is encoded as H.264 at 1080×1920 with high-quality settings, so it looks sharp on phones. With Fill or Zoom, part of the original frame is enlarged, so a 720p source will look softer than a 4K source. For the best result, start from the highest-resolution version of your video you have.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. The converter runs entirely in your browser using ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file is read from your disk, processed in your device's memory and saved straight back to your downloads. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, which also means there is no upload waiting time and no server-side file size limit.

What is the best size for YouTube Shorts?

YouTube Shorts should be vertical 9:16 at 1080×1920 pixels — exactly what this tool exports. Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long, but 15 to 60 seconds usually performs best. The same 1080×1920 size works for TikTok and Instagram Reels, so one export covers all three platforms.

Can I convert a horizontal video without cropping it?

Yes. Choose the Blurred background style. Your full 16:9 frame stays visible in the middle, and the space above and below is filled with a blurred, enlarged copy of the same video instead of black bars. It is the safest choice for gameplay, screen recordings and videos with text near the edges.

Can I convert several videos at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files at the same time and they are converted one after another with the same style and settings. When everything is done you can download each file separately or grab them all in a single ZIP. Each exported file uses one free export or one credit.

Does it add a watermark?

Never. Your vertical videos are exported clean, without any logo or branding from us — not on free exports and not on paid ones. If you want your own @channelname on the video, you can add it yourself in Advanced settings or with the separate Add Watermark tool.

Which file formats are supported?

You can add MP4, MOV and WebM files, which covers recordings from phones, cameras, OBS and most editing apps. Files up to about 500 MB work best because everything runs on your own device. The output is always an MP4 that YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook accept without problems.
